No. 8 Rams go 3-0 to claim Napa Valley tournament championship

NAPA – No. 8 state-ranked City College of San Francisco extended its winning streak to five games after going 3-0 over the weekend to take first place at the Napa Valley College Storm Surge Classic.

The Rams opened the tourney on Friday with a 62-49 win over Contra Costa College, picked up a 54-45 victory against host Napa Valley on Saturday, and closed out the tournament championship with a 71-68 overtime-win vs. Sierra College on Sunday.

CCSF had to come from behind to pull out the victory in OT against Sierra. The Rams trailed 40-25 at halftime and was down 46-25 with 8:30 left in the third. But San Francisco put together a huge 17-0 run to get back in the game at 46-42 with under a minute left in the quarter.

The Rams eventually took the lead in the fourth but couldn't hold it. Sierra nailed a 3-pointer with 53 seconds remaining to eventually send the game to overtime with it all tied up at 68. In extra time, Deonna Mayfield's layup and free throw were the only points scored by both squads as the Rams defense held on for the win.

CCSF freshman Aaliyah Dias was named the tournament MVP after scoring a game-high 20 points in the final against Sierra. The Rams got a double-double from Madison Thomas with 16 points and 17 rebounds while Mayfield had 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists on her way to all-tournament honors.

Dias put up 11 points and added 3 rebounds and 3 assists against Napa Valley. Deadriana Prim led CCSF with 14 points while Thomas posted 8 points and 13 boards. Mayfield had another solid all-around game with 9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals.

Thomas got the weekend off to a good start with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds against Contra Costa. Prim totaled 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists and Malea Scobie chipped in with 10 points.

The Rams improved to 6-1 overall with the three weekend wins. They are back in action on Thursday (Dec. 7) to open the three-day Los Angeles Valley College Tournament against Fullerton College at 7 p.m.
