Rams defense leads the way in second half, CCSF beats Sacramento City 30-10

SACRAMENTO – The City College of San Francisco football team pushed its winning streak to 16 games thanks to a 30-10 victory at Sacramento City College on Friday night at Hughes Stadium.

Backup quarterback Jeremy Stephens tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the second quarter and ran for 83 yards but it was the Rams' defense that stole the show.

CCSF held Sacramento City scoreless over the first, third, and fourth quarters while limiting the Panthers to 147 total yards of offense, including just 19 yards on the ground.

Andrew Woolard was stellar on D, as he totaled seven tackles (three for loss) and a seven-yard sack. Tyler Lepolo also had seven tackles, Jaleal Williams-Evans hauled in his second interception of the year, while Gabriel Iniguez and Nelson Ropati combined for another sack.

After a scoreless first half, Sacramento City (0-2) struck first, getting a 48-yard TD pass from Jemal Francois to Miles Williams at the 12:24 mark in the second to go ahead.

But on the ensuing drive, Stephens took the Rams downfield 59 yards over nine plays and capped the surge with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Daly to tie up the contest with 7:16 to play in the second.

The Rams went ahead for good minutes later thanks to a safety. On fourth down from their own 25-yard line, the Panthers' snap on the punt attempt sailed into the end zone and resulted in two more points for CCSF.

The ensuing kick off following the safety gave the Rams excellent field position and they took advantage. David Pierro grabbed his third touchdown of the season, a 31-yard strike from Stephens to extend the CCSF lead to 16-7 with 3:46 left in the half.

The Panthers were able to knock in a 42-yard field goal from Alejandro Rojas with 31 seconds left to send the game into the break with the Rams leading 16-10.

It was all CCSF in the second half. Starting quarterback Matt Jenner returned to run in from three yards out at the 12:19 mark in the third and Tyrei Washington added a two-yard touchdown run with 2:01 left in the contest to close out the scoring.

Jenner completed 12 of 17 passes for 157 yards while Stephens threw for 91 yards on 7 of 10 passing.

Pierro led CCSF receivers with 99 yards on six catches while Aaron Espero totaled nine receptions for 73 yards.

CCSF is back on the road next Saturday (Sep. 17) for its 1 p.m. game at Butte College. The Roadrunners are 1-1 and defeated Diablo Valley College 28-14 on Friday.
