Women's Volleyball Playoff Preview - CCSF vs Shasta College

Women's Volleyball Playoff Preview - CCSF vs Shasta College

by Marcus Tolero

The almost 20-year wait is over.

The No.5 seed City College of San Francisco Rams volleyball team (21-3 record) will host No.12 Shasta College on Tuesday at 7 p.m for round one of the California Community College Athletic Association NorCal Regional Playoffs.
This is the second year in a row that the Rams qualified for the postseason, but this is the first time that the Rams hosted a playoff game since 1998.

CCSF comes into this playoff matchup as one of the most dominant teams in the state.  Their 21-3 record is the best regular season finish in the school's history. They had winning streaks of nine games and six games and are currently riding a five-game winning streak. CCSF also never lost two games in a row this season. Their team totals of 1,134 kills and 1,044 assists rank the team No.6 and No.8 in those categories, respectively.
The Rams will look to the outstanding scoring duo of freshman Jennifer Quarters-Styles and sophomore Kijana Best to lead the offensive attack. Quarters-Styles' 470 kills and Best's 463 kills rank them No.1 and No.2 in the state, respectively. Setting up Quarters-Styles, Best, and freshman Lapepaaina Malieitulua (third-best on the team with 158 kills) will be Pamela Dungo. The freshman finished the season with 960 assists, which ranked her No.6 in the state.

This will not be the first time that CCSF and Shasta have faced each other this year. On September 10 at the Delta Classic, the Rams thoroughly beat Shasta 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-20). At the CCSF Golden Gate Classic on September 21, the Rams once again won 3-0 (28-26, 25-16, 25-20).

Although the Rams experienced early-season success against Shasta, CCSF will have to face a team that ranked No.3 in the state in kills (1,233) and No.1 in California in points (1,668.5). To combat Shasta's impressive attack, the Rams will lean on freshman Isoke Springer. Her 585 digs and 7.13 digs per set rank her No.5 and No.3 in those respective categories.
